Research

Applied Research Lab (ARL) is dedicated to a board program of basic and applied research in the areas relates to engineering and computing science. The laboratory’s mission is to advance the state-of-the-art applied research and develop technologies which benefit the world.

Through an aggressive and forward-looking research program, ARL participates in basic investigations in many areas. In general, our research is applied in nature and by providing a solution to a particular problem or towards in developing a prototype in demonstrating a new capability. We believe that effective systems research requires a blend of fundamental and experimental research activities. Analytical research is essential in developing a critical understanding of the research problem, design and implementation of prototype systems is required to evaluate the proposed solutions in real-world settings.

In carrying out the above-mentioned objectives, ARL has a strong emphasis on theoretical modeling, simulation, experimental work, data analysis, and prototyping. We have expertise in the following areas: computational intelligence, bioinformatics, visualization, and immersive environment.

Our research received grants from all three Canadian Government research funding agencies: the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Also, we received support from M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust and Mitacs.

Research in ARL is focused on these areas:

  • Computational intelligence
  • Bioinformatics
  • Design space exploration (DSE)
  • System design and engineering
  • Advanced computing applications for mobile devices
